Character information
Name:
Azula
Age:
~1500
Date of Birth:
July 23
Canon:
Avatar: The Last Airbender
Species:
Fae
Role:
member of the Seelie court
Rank:
1-2 (she is a Lady in her Court at home, but she has no such standing in this Court. her rank in her Court might earn her a place as a Knight, however)
Background:
Azula was born to Ozai, one of the sons of the Dragon King in the Other Realm in eastern Asia. He had a female consort, Ursa, in the Other Realm. When Azula was young, her grandfather died and her father ascended the throne of the Dragon Court. Her mother was banished and vanished from the court. A short while later, Azula's brother, Zuko, left the court. His precise fate (as well as whether he was banished, left, or became an outcast fae entirely) is unknown to Azula at present. However, his disappearance left her heir to the throne.
The politics of the ancient court Azula is part of (which is primarily located in China but has some influence in Japan, Thailand, and Tibet, along with other places) are different than most of the world. Different, even, than other courts in China, Japan, and the other regions that the "Elemental Courts" sometimes operate in. The fae are divided into four courts for the elements, and they maintain balance amongst themselves. Within the courts, there are two forces -- the order and the chaos. These are known as the Youkai (which is the equivalent of the Seelie) and Youma (roughly the Unseelie) and exist within the same court. Azula belongs to the Dragon Court who represent the element of fire. She is bound by her word and holds honor close to her, so she is affiliated with the Youkai. In order to control herself and her fire, Azula was also taught martial arts, used to bring her mind and body into balance. She is exceptionally gifted in the Northern Shaolin style of kung fu.
Azula has come to London to learn about the rest of the world and the fae politics of it. She is also to search for what her courts call the Avatar -- a legendary fae who is supposed to be able to control all four elements, meant to rule the four Courts over the kings and queens of the elements. Whether the Avatar actually exists, she doesn't know, but she has every intention of looking in case the stories are true. Her lessons, however, take priority, as she wants her father's throne for herself.
Personality:
Azula has been raised to be a princess, and she has lived for 1500 years, mostly exisiting in the Other Realm.
Her breeding and father's way of raising Azula means that she expects her will to be done thoroughly and without question. She seeks to stamp out any resistance, especially from mortals. While she cannot lie, she is happy to weave her words carefully to make sure every deal goes in her favor. Anyone who tries to back out of a deal with her suffers great consequences, usually far more severe than the original terms would have been.
For all that Azula likes to maintain that she is independent, she actually needs people around her. Her few friends are dear to her, even if she's left them to follow her father's wishes, and her family is a complicated situation. She desires her father's approval, but she also wants his throne. He has raised her to be ruthless, but she still wants to impress him. Her feelings for her brother are mixed, as she wants to both destroy him and have him back at her side. She dislikes talking about her mother, as she feels that is the ultimate betrayal, as the woman showed fear of her (while coddling and adoring her brother) for a long while before Ursa was banished from the court.
Azula has lived a long time for a human, but she is relatively young in terms of the fae. She refers to her age (and everyone else's who is a fae) in terms of counting a hundred years as one, so she introduces herself as "fifteen," feeling the "hundred" is implied. She has a great respect for her elders, eager to learn from them, though she also seeks to prove herself better than them. However, Azula is very awkward in any situation that isn't political. She has little experience with any kind of relaxed situation and tends to be perceived as too uptight in most cases.
For the pristine outer image Azula tries to project, her mind is troubled. She feels as though she is constantly being watched and that everyone, eventually, will betray her. She is also "haunted" by what she believes to be the ghost of her mother, though it may be a delusion born of the shock of her mother choosing to abandon her and prefering her brother over her.
Powers & Possessions:
Azula is adept at fire manipulation. Even among the Dragon Court, she is a prodigy. Her uncle and father -- both powerful fae in their own right -- do not have the command she does over fire, shown by the blue color of the flame and heat to match its color. She can also harness lighning during storms, but she has minimal powers to create it. She can generate a bit in her hands, about the wattage of a low-grade stun gun. Anything more is currently beyond her.
